ASSOCIATE PROGRAMME: YOUNG ACTORS COMPANY 11-14/16yrs
Intensive Accelerated Development

Young Actors Company 11-14/16yrs
An intensive, accelerated introduction to theatre and performance.
The development of a young performer requires more than the acquisition of technique. It requires opportunities to apply skills, explore creative possibilities and gain experience within the demands of a live production environment. The ABOP Young Actors Company offers young people aged 11–14/16 an intensive, accelerated performance programme designed to extend their abilities, broaden their experience and support their progression as performers.
This is not a conventional performing arts class with a production added at the end. The ABOP Young Actors Company is built around the practical experience of working as part of a theatre company. Members train, rehearse and perform, developing their understanding of the craft while taking on the creative and practical responsibilities involved in bringing a production to the stage.
The programme is ambitious and purposeful, with an emphasis on artistic development, personal responsibility and the pursuit of high standards. Young performers are encouraged to challenge themselves, take greater ownership of their work and develop the discipline, adaptability and commitment required to meet increasingly demanding performance challenges.
Learning Through Performance
At ABOP, performance is an integral part of the training process. It provides the context in which developing skills are tested, refined and applied, allowing young actors to build their experience through sustained practical work.
Through acting, character development, script interpretation, movement and rehearsal, company members explore a range of theatrical approaches and performance styles. They learn to make considered creative choices, respond to direction, develop their understanding of character and contribute effectively to the interpretation of a production.
Training is connected directly to the work being undertaken. Skills must be applied, decisions considered and performances developed in response to the material, the director's vision and the needs of the ensemble. This requires performers to think independently while remaining responsive to the wider creative process.
Each production presents new demands and opportunities for growth. The objective is to develop performers who can apply their abilities with increasing confidence, understanding and artistic maturity.
A Company, Not Just a Class
Membership of the ABOP Young Actors Company involves becoming part of a working ensemble in which individual contributions directly affect the quality of the whole production.
Young performers are expected to approach their work with preparation, concentration and a clear sense of responsibility. They must be willing to learn their material, respond constructively to direction, support their fellow performers and understand the importance of reliability throughout the rehearsal and performance process.
As performers mature, so too does their responsibility for the work. They are encouraged to contribute ideas, engage thoughtfully with the creative process and recognise that successful theatre depends upon a combination of individual ability and collective commitment.
The company also provides an environment in which young actors can develop their own creative identity. Different perspectives, interpretations and performance strengths contribute to the richness of the ensemble, while an understanding of the production as a whole helps ensure that individual choices serve the wider work.
The ability to combine personal creativity with professional working habits is an important part of the development expected within the programme.
Accelerated Development Through Experience
The accelerated nature of the ABOP Young Actors Company provides young performers with opportunities to develop through sustained involvement in training, rehearsal and production. Rather than treating performance as an occasional outcome of learning, the programme places practical experience at the centre of the developmental process.
Working across different productions exposes actors to a variety of scripts, characters, theatrical styles and ensemble dynamics. Each new project requires them to draw upon existing knowledge while adapting to unfamiliar material, exploring different approaches and addressing new creative challenges.
This progression allows experience to accumulate. Lessons from one production can inform the next, enabling performers to refine their technique, deepen their understanding and approach increasingly complex material with greater independence.
The emphasis is not simply on undertaking more productions, but on making each experience meaningful. Through continued practical application, young actors develop a stronger understanding of their craft, greater awareness of their own capabilities and a more considered approach to the demands of performance.
The objective is to provide a substantial foundation for continued development, whether that leads to further specialist training, drama school, professional aspirations or a lifelong involvement in the performing arts.
High Expectations. Real Experience. Continued Development.
ABOP believes that young performers benefit from an environment in which ambition is encouraged and potential is actively developed. As abilities grow, expectations must grow with them, providing opportunities to extend skills, take on greater responsibility and pursue increasingly challenging work.
Within the ABOP Young Actors Company, commitment, preparation, adaptability and attention to detail are essential. Performers are encouraged to approach challenges with determination, learn constructively from experience and recognise that progress depends upon consistent effort and a willingness to develop.
High standards apply throughout the process, from preparation and rehearsal to the final performance. Young actors are expected to take their responsibilities seriously while remaining open to experimentation, creative discovery and new ways of working.
The aim is to develop performers who combine artistic curiosity with discipline, who can make independent creative choices while working effectively within an ensemble, and who understand the commitment required to produce work of quality.
For young people with enthusiasm, aptitude and a genuine willingness to commit, the ABOP Young Actors Company offers the opportunity to extend their experience, strengthen their abilities and discover what they can achieve through sustained involvement in theatre.
At ABOP, young actors develop through doing the work: training, rehearsing, performing and building upon every experience.

Commitment and Expectations
Being part of a company means being responsible for your contribution.
Membership of the ABOP Young Actors Company is a commitment to the work, to the company and to personal development. Young performers aged 11–14/16 are expected to engage with a structured, intensive and accelerated programme in which preparation, reliability, concentration and a shared commitment to performance are essential.
Being part of a theatre company requires an understanding that individual actions have consequences for the wider ensemble. Rehearsals depend upon performers arriving prepared, scenes rely upon the contributions of others, and productions require every member to fulfil their responsibilities consistently.
Company members are therefore expected to attend regularly, arrive on time, learn their material, prepare independently and respond constructively to direction. They must be willing to work through challenges, accept feedback, support their fellow performers and take increasing responsibility for the quality of their own work.
As young actors develop, they are expected to become more independent in their preparation and more aware of what is required to contribute effectively to a production. Commitment involves more than attendance; it means approaching the work with purpose, maintaining focus and recognising the importance of each individual's contribution.
These expectations reflect the nature of an accelerated performance programme and help establish the working habits required for continued development.
A Commitment from Parents, Too
Although young performers are expected to take increasing responsibility for their own development, parental and carer support remains an important part of company membership.
Families must recognise that the programme extends beyond attendance at regular sessions. Rehearsals, preparation and productions form connected parts of the experience, and participation requires a willingness to accommodate the commitments associated with the production schedule.
This includes supporting regular attendance, ensuring that performers have time to learn lines and prepare material independently, responding to company communications and making the necessary arrangements for rehearsals and performances.
Production periods may involve additional rehearsals or changes to the usual schedule. Families should be prepared to support these requirements when communicated in advance and understand that consistency is essential to the work of the company.
A production is a collective undertaking. Unavoidable absences can arise, but regular attendance and preparation are important because the work of one performer is often closely connected to that of others.
Ambition, Accountability and Development
High expectations are an important part of the ABOP approach. They encourage young performers to take ownership of their work, develop their abilities and understand the relationship between preparation, effort and achievement.
The programme is designed to challenge performers constructively, encouraging them to move beyond familiar approaches, respond to feedback and develop greater independence. Mistakes and difficulties are recognised as part of the learning process, but a willingness to address them and apply what has been learned is essential.
Young actors are supported in developing the resilience, concentration, discipline and adaptability required to meet the demands of performance. They are encouraged to take pride in their achievements while recognising that continued progress requires commitment and a readiness to keep learning.
The intention is to provide an environment in which ambition is matched by responsibility, creative freedom by discipline, and individual development by commitment to the company.
Joining the ABOP Young Actors Company means making a meaningful commitment to the work, to fellow company members and to your own continued development. We ask young performers and their families to consider these expectations carefully before auditioning, ensuring that those who join are ready to embrace both the opportunities and the responsibilities of membership.
