Young Actors Company 14/16-18yrs

An intensive, accelerated programme for advanced young performers.

The transition from developing performer to aspiring professional requires a significant step in commitment, ability and artistic understanding. The ABOP Young Actors Company provides an intensive, accelerated programme for talented young actors aged 16–18 who are ready to undertake challenging theatrical work, pursue artistic excellence and take their performance ambitions seriously.

This is not a conventional performing arts course. It is a company-based programme built around demanding productions, substantial performance opportunities and the expectation that every member will contribute at a high level. Young actors work with challenging material, explore complex characters and engage with the creative and practical demands of bringing ambitious productions to the stage.

The programme is particularly suited to those considering a future in theatre, acting, drama school or further specialist training. It provides an environment in which existing abilities can be extended, artistic instincts refined and the discipline required for more advanced performance developed through sustained practical work.

Members are expected to approach their work with ambition, independence and a genuine commitment to excellence. The objective is to challenge highly capable young performers to move beyond what they already know and discover the level at which they can work.

Learning Through Performance

At this stage of development, technical ability must be matched by depth of interpretation, artistic judgement and the capacity to make compelling creative choices. Performance provides the opportunity to bring these elements together.

Through demanding scripts, complex characterisation and a range of theatrical styles, company members are challenged to explore the deeper intentions, relationships and conflicts within a piece of work. They develop their ability to interpret text, make precise and imaginative choices, respond intelligently to direction and sustain the truth of a character throughout a performance.

The work requires more than technical competence. Actors must demonstrate emotional range, vocal and physical control, sensitivity to their fellow performers and an understanding of how individual moments contribute to the dramatic structure as a whole.

Performers are encouraged to take increasing ownership of their preparation and creative decisions, engaging critically with the material while remaining responsive to the director's vision. They learn to approach performance with greater subtlety, precision and purpose.

The aim is to develop actors capable of meeting the artistic demands of challenging productions and approaching their work with the depth, confidence and maturity expected at an advanced level.

A Company, Not Just a Class

The ABOP Young Actors Company brings together highly talented young performers who share a serious commitment to their craft and a determination to achieve their potential.

Working at this level requires an understanding that individual excellence must be supported by professional discipline and collective responsibility. Every member is expected to arrive prepared, engage fully with the rehearsal process, respond constructively to direction and contribute positively to the creative work of the company.

The ensemble must be able to depend upon each performer. Reliability, concentration, generosity, adaptability and respect for the work of others are fundamental expectations. Strong individual performances are important, but they must operate within a shared understanding of the production and a commitment to its overall quality.

At the same time, the company encourages artistic individuality. Performers are challenged to develop their own interpretations, trust their creative instincts and bring distinctive perspectives to the work. They must be able to think independently while collaborating effectively with others and responding to the demands of the production.

These are essential qualities for anyone considering further professional training or a future in the performing arts: the ability to combine individual talent with the discipline, awareness and collaborative instinct required to create exceptional theatre.

Accelerated Development Through Experience

The accelerated nature of the ABOP Young Actors Company provides sustained opportunities to engage with demanding material and develop through successive production experiences.

Each production presents a new artistic challenge. Different texts, characters, performance styles and directorial approaches require actors to reassess their methods, extend their range and apply their skills with increasing sophistication. Familiar techniques must be adapted to unfamiliar circumstances, while more complex material demands deeper analysis, greater precision and a more developed understanding of performance.

The progression from one production to the next is particularly valuable for performers considering professional training. Experience becomes a means of identifying strengths, addressing weaknesses and developing a more informed understanding of the demands of advanced acting.

Rather than relying solely on instruction, performers learn through the sustained application of their abilities. They encounter challenging work, receive direction, make adjustments and discover how to bring greater clarity and consistency to their performances.

This process encourages a more independent approach to the craft. Actors become better equipped to analyse material, prepare thoroughly, make purposeful choices and respond to the changing demands of rehearsal and live performance.

For those intending to pursue drama school or professional opportunities, this experience can provide a valuable foundation on which to build. It is not a substitute for further specialist training, but an opportunity to approach that next stage with greater experience, artistic understanding and a clearer sense of the commitment involved.

High Expectations. Challenging Work. Artistic Excellence.

The 16–18 age group represents the most advanced stage of the ABOP Young Actors Company. It is intended for young performers who demonstrate considerable potential and are prepared to match that potential with sustained effort, discipline and ambition.

The work is demanding, and expectations are high. Company members are expected to approach rehearsals with preparation and purpose, engage seriously with direction, demonstrate technical and creative precision, and maintain the quality of their work throughout the production process.

They are encouraged to take artistic risks, question familiar approaches and explore material beyond their immediate experience. Challenge is an essential part of the process: it provides the opportunity to discover new capabilities, develop greater range and establish a more sophisticated relationship with the craft of acting.

ABOP seeks to create an environment in which exceptional talent is recognised but never treated as a finished achievement. Ability must be continually developed, creative instincts refined and standards maintained through hard work and a willingness to improve.

For young actors aspiring to a future in theatre or the wider performing arts, the company offers an opportunity to test their abilities against demanding material, deepen their understanding of the profession they may wish to enter and prepare themselves for the next stage of their development.

At ABOP, talent is the starting point. Commitment, discipline and the pursuit of excellence determine how far it can develop.

Commitment and Expectations

Serious ambition demands serious commitment.

Membership of the ABOP Young Actors Company at 16–18 requires a high level of personal commitment. The programme is designed for performers who are prepared to prioritise their development, take responsibility for their preparation and contribute consistently to the work of the company.

Attendance, punctuality, preparation and reliability are essential. Company members are expected to learn material thoroughly, undertake independent preparation, respond professionally to direction and arrive at rehearsals ready to work. They must be willing to examine their own performances critically, accept constructive feedback and make the adjustments necessary to meet the demands of the production.

At this level, responsibility extends beyond fulfilling instructions. Performers are expected to demonstrate initiative, manage their time effectively, identify areas for improvement and take an active role in their own artistic development.

The demands of a production may be considerable, requiring sustained concentration, adaptability and the ability to maintain performance standards under pressure. Members must understand that their commitment affects not only their own progress but also the work of their fellow performers and the success of the company as a whole.

These expectations reflect the seriousness of the programme and the ambitions of those who choose to undertake it.

A Commitment from Parents, Too

Although performers in this age group are expected to take substantial responsibility for their own development, family support can remain important, particularly during demanding production periods.

Young actors and their families should understand the time commitment involved in an intensive programme of training, rehearsal and performance. Regular attendance and independent preparation are essential, and production schedules may require additional rehearsals and sustained periods of focus.

Families should be prepared to support the practical arrangements associated with participation and recognise that productions depend upon the consistent involvement of the entire company. Any additional rehearsal or performance commitments will need to be accommodated as part of the programme.

For young people considering professional training, this period can also involve balancing academic responsibilities, auditions and future planning. Effective organisation and clear communication are therefore particularly important.

The aim is to establish a realistic and shared understanding of the demands involved, enabling young performers to approach their work with the focus and consistency required.

Ambition, Accountability and Professional Preparation

The senior company is intended for young performers who want to push themselves artistically and understand what sustained commitment to acting entails.

Members are encouraged to approach challenges with determination, respond thoughtfully to criticism and recognise that progress depends upon an honest assessment of their work. Talent and enthusiasm are important, but continued development also requires patience, self-discipline and the willingness to address areas that need improvement.

The programme encourages performers to take increasing ownership of their artistic choices and working practices. They must be prepared to move beyond familiar strengths, explore demanding material and maintain high standards even when the work becomes difficult.

For those aspiring to professional theatre or further specialist training, these habits are particularly valuable. They help establish a more realistic understanding of the expectations associated with advanced performance and the commitment required to pursue a career in the performing arts.

Joining the senior ABOP Young Actors Company means committing to challenging work, collective responsibility and the continual development of your abilities. Prospective members should consider carefully whether they are ready to meet the demands of the programme and make the contribution expected of a company member at this level.

Joining the Company

The ABOP Young Actors Company for ages 16–18 offers an opportunity for talented, committed young performers to undertake challenging theatrical work within an intensive, accelerated programme.

Membership is intended for those who want to develop their craft seriously, extend their performance experience and explore the possibility of further training or a career in theatre and the performing arts.

Applicants should be prepared for a substantial commitment to rehearsal, preparation and performance, alongside the responsibility of working as part of a company with high artistic expectations.

We are looking for young performers with ability, ambition, creative curiosity and the determination to make the most of their potential. Above all, we seek individuals who are ready to work hard, respond to challenge and contribute meaningfully to the quality of the company's productions.

Auditions

Entry to the ABOP Young Actors Company is through audition. At this level, the audition process provides an opportunity to assess not only a performer's existing abilities, but also their artistic potential, interpretative understanding and readiness to engage with challenging work.

We are looking for young actors who demonstrate strong performance instincts, imagination, commitment and an openness to direction. The ability to make considered choices, respond to feedback and explore material with depth and purpose is particularly important.

Previous performance experience and existing technical skills are valuable, but we are also interested in the qualities that indicate an actor's capacity to develop further: curiosity, resilience, self-awareness and a willingness to work beyond familiar territory.

Auditioning is an opportunity for performers to demonstrate their abilities and ambitions, while allowing ABOP to assess their suitability for the senior company and the demands of its programme.

Further information about audition dates, audition material and the application process will be provided here.
